It seems that bim.GROUP interns are collecting accolades one after another! Dumitrascu Darius, an intern at one of our company group’s strategic partners, achieved success in the highly esteemed Steel Lion competition organized by the ConSteel team for several years now.
The ConSteel Steel Lion Award was primarily established to allow ConSteel software users to compete with their steel structure building design projects. This competition is not only open to real-life large-scale projects but is also extended to students' thesis works, allowing them to compete in a separate category with their achievements. The diploma competition aims to challenge students while encouraging them to create something exceptional.
Darius's thesis focused on designing a 52-meter-high steel-framed office building, inspired by London’s iconic Gherkin building. The London structure features a specific diagrid system, which is so rarely used that he had never encountered it during his studies. This rarity motivated him to challenge himself, gain new knowledge, and ultimately led to the idea of modeling the structure based on the Gherkin. The biggest innovation in his work was the parametric design, a field he wanted to explore more deeply.
“To be honest, at first, I didn’t think about submitting my project. However, thanks to the supportive environment and the encouragement of Lewandowski Dávid (bim.GROUP) and Kiss Ádám (ConSteel Solutions), I eventually did—and it seems they saw potential in it for a good reason,” Darius emphasized when talking about his application.

“I should add that I worked on my thesis independently and in collaboration with my professors, as I wasn’t yet part of the company at the time of the project’s development,” Darius added.
“The topic became very important to me because it allowed me to grow significantly in both parametrization and design. I took on a truly complex challenge, and I feel I was able to accomplish it. This award means a lot to me; it’s an incredible feeling to receive positive feedback from the industry. It also gives me confidence and motivation for my future career in structural engineering,” Darius concluded.
Congratulations on this recognition, and we wish you continued success!
